Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting some new weaning recipes that I’ve created for Tommee Tippee, for use with their new Quick Cook blender, as part of a paid partnership with them.

Here is a link to the first recipe I created for them, which is a basic courgette puree which should work as a first food for baby at the very start of weaning.

However, I wanted to use this work as an opportunity to show parents how they can use a blender for many stages of weaning, not just for purees and also for recipes to feed the whole family. I also wanted to use it as an opportunity to talk about how you can really explore and experiment with textures and flavours when it comes to weaning – adding in herbs and spices so families don’t feel the need to make dishes bland for baby.

So up next is recipe 2…which really highlights the “next steps” stage in your weaning journey…

Recipe 2: Salmon and potato mash/Fish cakes – Next Steps for Baby

After the first tastes (1 or two weeks usually) of purees, it’s a good idea to start moving to thicker textures and towards more mashed foods for baby.

This next recipe is all about the next steps when introducing solid foods to baby. Building on the variety and the textures that your little one has in their diet. No more single tastes, but combining ingredients and adding in some flavours too.

I’ve also tried to combine this recipe so that it’s really two recipes in one. The fish cakes can be created by adding just a couple of extra ingredients – and these are perfect for babies who are following the baby led weaning route too, as well as for older babies who are a little more experienced with their textures. If you’re having these yourself, why not try them with a squeeze of lemon and a dollop of yogurt too or you could try adding some extra spice – a pinch of salt, a little paprika or even some black pepper – into the fishcakes.

Please be aware that salmon (fish) is a potential allergen, so if your little one hasn’t had it before, it’s a good idea to offer a small amount initially and leave a couple of days before offering another allergen to check for any reaction. So here is recipe number 2…

Salmon, potato & parsley mash/fish cakes – Baby’s next steps

Makes around 2-3 portions of mash or 2-3 fish cakes


  • 50g of salmon fillet
  • 150g potato, peeled and cut into fingers
  • 1 small handful of chopped fresh parsley
  • Extras for fish cakes (for baby lead weaning or just as a finger food for baby):
  • 1 small egg
  • 2 extra large pinches of flour


  • Remove the skin from the salmon (you can also do this more easily after steaming if you prefer) and add it to the Quick Cook main jug along with the potato. Steam the cod and potatoes for 15 minutes.
  • Once steamed, remove the jug from the Quick Cook and drain the water. *Go to step 5 below if you’re making into fritters* Remove a few of the potato fingers to offer on the side as a finger food and remove the skin from the salmon.
  • Add the chopped parsley to the Quick Cook jug along with the rest of the potato and the salmon and blend all the ingredients for around 10 seconds.
  • You can add a drop of milk if needed, and serve your mash for baby along with some potato fingers.
  • To make into fritters start at step 2 after draining all the water and add an egg and two large pinches of flour (you might need more of this depending on how wet the mixture is) along with the chopped parsley. Blend the ingredients for around 10 seconds.
  • If the mixture is a little wet, add some more flour and stir it through the mixture until it gets thick enough to dollop into a pan.
  • Heat a little oil in a pan and dollop some of the potato mix into the centre. Cook until it starts to brown and then flip it over and do the same on the other side.

You can freeze the fritters if you want to at this stage.
